- Want family to reach your Gmail, Photos or iCloud? Use Google Inactive Account Manager and Apple Legacy Contact. They are free and built in.
- Want one place for documents? Look at Everplans or Trustworthy.
- Want people notified if you go quiet, across more than one account or country? Look for an app with check-ins, such as Remayn.
- Need a legal will or trust? Use Trust & Will or an attorney, then store the documents in an app.
For a wider comparison that includes the UK and Africa, see best digital legacy platforms. For how Google, Apple and Facebook handle this, see legacy contacts.
What is a next of kin app?
An app that stores who your trusted people are and what they need to find, such as accounts, documents and instructions. Some also check in with you and notify your contacts if you stop responding.
Do Apple and Google have their own next of kin tools?
Yes. Apple Legacy Contact lets a named person access your Apple account data after your death with an access key and a death certificate. Google Inactive Account Manager notifies up to 10 trusted contacts after a period of inactivity you choose. Both cover only that company’s own data.
Does an app replace a will?
No. A will is a legal document and has to be signed and witnessed as your state requires. An app helps people find what you have. Use an attorney for a complex estate.
What about my bank accounts?
A next of kin app does not change who a bank pays. A payable-on-death designation on the account does that. Without one and without a will, the account usually goes through probate. See our page on banks and customers with no next of kin.
Why is Remayn listed first?
It is built around check-ins and notifying next of kin, and it works across borders, which suits people in the US with family or assets abroad.
